Wild Trail │ Wuhan · Enshi · Zhangjiajie

Trip Overview

Trace a path from the banks of the Yangtze to the floating peaks that inspired Avatar. Begin in Wuhan, where the Yellow Crane Tower looks out over the river that splits the city in three, then head deep into the karst wilderness of western Hunan and Hubei: the sheer walls of the Enshi Grand Canyon, the underground rivers of Tenglong Cave, and a glass skywalk bolted to the cliffs of Tianmen Mountain. Wander the stilted riverside town of Fenghuang before arriving at Wulingyuan, where more than 3,000 quartz-sandstone pillars rise straight out of the mist.

Into the Karst: Tenglong Cave

High-speed rail to Lichuan, then down into Tenglong Cave, Asia's largest karst cave system, big enough to hold an underground river and its own weather.

Enshi Grand Canyon

The Yunlong Geological Rift, the Qixingzhai cliffside walkway, and the towering Zhucheng Incense Pillar, a stone column standing alone above the canyon floor.

Tusi City & Furong Town

Enshi Tusi City's Tujia stilted-house complex, then on to Furong Town, the "Ancient Town Hanging Over a Waterfall," and it earns the name.

Fenghuang Ancient Town

Stroll the Tuojiang riverside stilt houses of this 300-year-old Miao and Tujia town, best seen in the hour after the lanterns come on.

Tianmen Mountain

Ride the cable car up toward Tianmen Cave - a natural stone arch punched through the mountain - then cross the glass walkway bolted to the cliff face.

Zhangjiajie / Wulingyuan

Tour the Wulingyuan Scenic Area's quartz-sandstone peak forests: more than 3,000 pillars, and the real-world inspiration for the floating mountains of Avatar.
